Bacteriophage infecting types

Bacteriophages can be differentiated into a variety of types based on the types of infections they are capable of displaying.

Phage infecting types include...

  1. Obligately productive (with either lytic or chronic release)
  2. Temperate (same phage, either lysogenic or productive infecting)
  3. Defective (unable to infect, but in some cases able to transduce)

In general all phages are capable, against their will, of displaying phage-destructive infections, i.e., restrictive or abortive infections, but that is not equivalent to these phages being defective.
